THE PANTRY IS FULL!!!

IMG_0215WE HAVE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD ALL SUMMER TO FILL THE PANTRY AND THE FREEZER WITH OUR WONDERFUL FARM PRODUCE TO EAT THIS WINTER. THE SUMMER HAS FLOWN BY AND IT IS TIME FOR THE GRANDCHILDREN TO START SCHOOL AND LIFE ON THE FARM TO SLOW DOWN A LITTLE. WE HAVE LOTS TO DO IN THE FALL BUT NOT LIKE IN THE SMMER WHEN WE ARE PICKING BLUEBERRIES EVERY OTHER DAY AND PROCESSING SOME TYPE OF CANNED GOODS FOR THE PANTRY ALMOST DAILY. WE TRY TO NEVER LET ANYTHING GO TO WASTE AT THE FARM, IF WE CANNOT USE IT WE FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN.

SOMETIMES THE PRODUCE IS JUST NOT UP TO OUR STANDARDS SO THE CHICKENS OR SOME OF THE OTHER ANIMALS GET TO HAVE FRESH VEGETABLES. OUR CHICKENS ARE OUT ROAMING THE FIELDS DURING THE DAY BUT IN THE EVENING WE PUT THEM IN THEIR PEN SO WILD ANIMALS CANNOT GET TO THEM. WE ALWAYS HAVE A TREAT FOR THEM WHEN WE GO TO PUT THEM UP AT NIGHT AND THEY ALWAYS COME RUNNING WHEN THEY HEAR THE POLARIS. SOMETIMES THEY EVEN HOP ON FOR A RIDE.

BEING ABLE TO PRODUCE YOUR FOOD AND PRESERVE IT AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS IN THE JAR IS VERY REWARDING. MY MOM WAS ALWAYS SO PROUD OF THE FOOD SHE PROCESSED FOR HER FAMILY AND WHEN I WAS YOUNG I DIDN’T GET IT BUT NOW THAT I AM OLDER AND DOING THE PRESEVING I REALLY REALLY UNDERSTAND. THERE IS NO BETTER FEELING IN THE WORLD THAN KNOWING THE FOOD YOUR FAMILY IS EATING IS THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE.

THE FOLLOWING PICTURES ARE OUR VEGETABLES GROWN ON THE FARM AND ALL THE WONDERUL ITEMS IN OUR PANTRY FOR THE WINTER.

  1. I’ll take 1 quart of honey. The pantry is defiantly full and looks great. You are right, grandma was always proud of what she prepared. I miss her and mom’s cooking something terribly. Her preserves were always the best, and I really miss the shelly green beans. The ones we get at home out of the can don’t even come close.
